Christ Central Church was planted as a daughter church of Uptown Church in 2003. Pastor Giorgio Hiatt, an Assistant Pastor at Uptown Church before Christ Central was started, had a vision along with a number of members and church leadership to see a diverse, African American led church planted in Charlotte. While pastoring a PCA church in Baltimore, MD, Pastor Howard Brown was contacted by Giorgio Hiatt about his interest in being the lead pastor in a church plant in Charlotte. After initially refusing the offer, two years later after much prayer and moving of the heart by the Lord, Pastor Howard Brown agreed to move to Charlotte to co-plant Christ Central Church with Giorgio Hiatt as the Senior Pastor of Christ Central Church.
Christ Central set a mission of freeing people to enjoy God, hear God’s truth, form authentic relationships and face the world with the renewed dignity that comes from Christ. Christ Central Church providentially began in the diverse and eclectic arts district of Charlotte known as NoDa. For nine years, Pastor Brown and Hiatt ministering together saw God add people to the congregation, facilitate diversity and achieve an impact through the ministry. In 2012, Pastor Hiatt, left Christ Central Chuch to serve as Senior Pastor of Redeemer PCA church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Having grown to about 350 members, Christ Central Church moved to a new facility, not far from their first location, in the fall of 2014. The facility, a joint venture between Christ Central and the non-profit ministry Project 658, primarily committed to ministering to refugees in the area, is providing more growth and outreach opportunities for Christ Central Church. Feeling more established and alive than ever, Christ Central Church looks forward to not only growing in numbers and diversity, but over the next 2 years, to begin to send out raised up leadership to plant churches in Charlotte to continue the mission: that even more people will be freed to enjoy God hear his truth, form authentic relationships and face the world with the renewed dignity that comes from Christ.
